If most of the risers listed here would be available at reasonable prices, then the "Ideal workstation" might be build even with the use of standard eATX motherboards - though in a special case (6-8U wide or high).

PCIe x16 active risers
Standard PCIe x16 active riser:
- with two x16 slots
- one x16 and two x8 slots
- four x8 slots
Will serve either as a first step connections multipliers (residing in the motherboard slots) or as "server side" active risers (in the second case, connected by ribbon risers to the motherboard or active risers).
Standard PCIe x16 active mini-backplanes
"Server side" risers are the same as the PCIe x16 active bridges, but also should be available as the "right side" ones (for convinience of use)
"Graphic side" should be based on Lucid Hydra 100 chip and have the lenght: 2 cards (2 slots installed, 1 empty), 3 cards (3 slots installed, 2 empty) and 4 cards (4 slots installed, 3 empty)
3 cards rised should have 1 x16 slot and a combination of x16/x8(when blocked) + x8(blocking) slots
4 cards rised should have a pair of x16/x8(when blocked) + x8(blocking) slots combinations

Well, this is again "server side" solutions - one x16 to two x8, one x16 to four x4 (also needed in left and right side variations)
May be used both as risers (left side ones) and mini-backplanes

One x8 to two x4 and one x8 to one x4 + three x2 splitters (again, left and right)
Different vendors apply the terms "left side" and "right side" differently - I use "left side" for standard (adapter cards like) and "right side" for mirrored (Supermicro UIO cards like)
