About this project
The best computer will not be ever built - at least in the foreseen future. Not, because to-day best is to-morrow outdated. Even with the "heat barrier" that does not allow to make computer IC's working at the frequencies higher than 5-6GHz (or 3.5-4.0 without extreme cooling), more powerful processors and chipsets are coming to life every year.
The idea of this project is to specify the most powerful (and convenient) system the modern technologies allow, that may be used both as graphics super-workstation and home entertainment unit.
The project will have three threads:
- "Within the reasons" - describes the most powerful system that might be built to-day within more or less reasonable budget using off-the-shelf components
The one specified now costs even less than less powerful HP or Dell solutions awailable!
- "Price is not an option" - describes the most powerful system that might be built within 3-6 months neglecting most price limitations.
Ultra workstation - describes the most powerful system that, in principle, might be built using existing technologies (well, some R/D still needed).
There is also included a "Wish list", where I allow myself to introduce the solutions that may be produced without the too big price tag (well, some of them might be really useful, some not quite so, some nearly obsolete (as RInDMA drive), but not yet outperformed).
The project also includes the "Hardware lies" section, where I present some of my thoughts on current computer vendors morals.
Also there is a "Useful resources" section where I try to organize in more or less convenient form the information on not quite often needed resources otherwise difficult to find
It is a "live" project, as there are always some new solutions arriving.
